Federal Direct Loan Instructions

Please read all of this information carefully. If you have any difficulty completing the Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Note contact Direct Loan Applicant Services at (800) 848-0979.

Finalizing Your Federal Direct Subsidized and/or Unsubsidized Loan

1. Accept the offer of the Federal Direct Subsidized and/or Unsubsidized Loan on your AppalNet account. To understand the difference between a subsidized and unsubsidized loan, interest rates, annual and aggregate loan limits click here

2. Go to studentloans.gov. This is the official Federal Direct Loan website.

3.Visit https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/ for more information on Direct Loans.

4. Sign in using your Federal Student Aid PIN. This is the same PIN that you use to electronically sign your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If you do not remember your PIN go to the PIN website to obtain it.

5. Once signed in all student borrowers must complete the Direct Loan electronic Master Promissory Note for a subsidized and/or unsubsidized Loan by clicking on the Complete MPN under the Master Promissory Note section and then select Subsidized/Unsubsidized.

6. Complete the entire MPN process confirming that you have completed all steps. Print your confirmation and disclosure notice for your records. The Office of Student Financial Aid will receive an electronic notification when you have successfully completed the MPN process and have accepted your Federal Direct Subsidized and/or Unsubsidized Loan on your AppalNET account.

7. If you have never borrowed a Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loan , you are required to complete the Direct Loan Entrance Counseling in the My Profile section. When you have successfully completed the Direct Loan Entrance Counseling, the Office of Student Financial Aid will be electronically notified. Your loan funds will not be released by the Direct Loan Program if you do not complete this entrance counseling.

8. Borrowers should be aware of consolidation opportunities. To help you make a determination of whether you qualify and/or wish to consolidate your loans with the Direct Loan Program go to https://studentloans.gov/myDirectLoan/index.action

9. You are encouraged to review your Federal Direct student loan documents on a regular basis at www.studentloans.gov.

10. You are also encouraged to review all of your FFEL Program Loan and Direct Loan data at www.nslds.ed.gov on a regular basis.

Entrance Counseling

Entrance counseling is required for all first-time loan borrowers at Appalachian State University.

This link will direct you to the studentloans.gov website. You will need to log in to this site using your FAFSA pin number, Social Security number, date of birth and last name. Once logged in click the link on the left to "Complete Counseling".

Exit Counseling

Exit counseling should be completed within 30 days prior to graduation or within 30 days after dropping below 6 hours of enrollment.

This link will direct you to the studentloans.gov website. You will need to log in to this site using your FAFSA pin number, Social Security number, date of birth and last name. Once logged in click the link on the left to "Complete Counseling".
