The Higher Education Act of 2008 (HEOA) requires colleges and universities that participate in federal student aid programs to disclose certain information to prospective and current students as well as university employees.

A notice of the availability of the information pursuant to specific requirements under the HEOA, as amended is emailed to enrolled students, prospective students and employees as required by regulation.

  • The Disability Resources (ODR) unit of Access & Opportunity oversees access needs, resources/supports and eligibility of appropriate accommodations (adjustments, auxiliary aids/services and reasonable modifications) based on disability for students and visitors. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA)

Appalachian State University endorses and seeks to comply with all provisions of the "Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974" (FERPA) and all pertinent regulations. FERPA provides eligible students certain rights with respect to their education records. Summer Financial Aid

  • Summer aid is available to students who qualify and are registered based on the prior year’s FAFSA. 

Financial Aid for Study Abroad

Student Employment and Work Study

  • There are a wide range of employment opportunities available on and off campus. Students who have submitted a FAFSA and have financial need are eligible to be paid for their work through the Federal Work Study Program.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

  • In order to maintain eligibility for federal, state, and institutional financial aid, a student must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) toward the completion of a degree or a certificate. 

Terms and Conditions

  • Accepting your award on AppalNet certifies that you have read the terms and conditions and understand that the award messages on your account may change if your financial aid offer is adjusted. Students should monitor their AppalNet account and Appstate email account regularly.
    • Students have the option to request all financial aid notifications and announcements be sent to them in a printed manner rather than electronic format. In order to make this request, the student will be required to meet with a financial aid counselor to complete the necessary form.

Loan Entrance Counseling

  • The first time you borrow a federal student loan, you have to complete an online entrance counseling session.  The session will help you understand your obligation to repay, your repayment plan options, and who you should contact if you have questions or run into trouble.  The loan counseling only needs to be completed once, even if you borrow every year. 

Loan Exit Counseling

  • Every federal student loan borrower who drops below half-time must complete an online exit counseling session that will outline repayment obligations, describe repayment plan options, and list helpful resources. 

Master Promissory Notes

The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a legal document where you promise to repay your loans and any accrued interest and fees.  It also explains the terms and conditions of your loans.  You need to sign one promissory note for your federal student loans, even if you have multiple loans over the course of your enrollment.

Withdrawal Policy

  • The Office of the University Registrar manages withdrawals from the university and reductions in schedules.  Both of these policies which do have financial impacts on the student account can be found on the Registrar’s Office website.

Return of Title IV Policy

Sex Offender Registry

North Carolina law requires that sex offenders register with the sheriff of the county in which they live if they are North Carolina residents. The North Carolina Registry of Sex Offenders can be accessed online or be viewed at the Watauga County Sheriff's Office.

Gainful Employment

In order to be eligible for funding under the Higher Education Act Title IV student assistance programs, an educational program must lead to a degree or it must prepare its students for “gainful employment” in a recognized occupation. Appalachian State complies with new regulations established July 1, 2024 by transmitting program level data for debt to earnings ratios for required programs and by providing information about financial costs and benefits to students.
