Accessing Student Information

We send most of our correspondence regarding students' financial aid directly to students via email. If you want to stay informed and help your student manage their financial aid, there are a few things to know:

Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended (FERPA), Appalachian State University is restricted in releasing student information without the consent of the student.  Parents do not have automatic access to the student's education or financial aid records. In order for us to discuss a student's financial aid information with a parent, the student must have granted Parent Access through their AppalNet portal. Students may grant access for up to two individuals. If we receive a visit or a call from someone who has not been granted access, our office cannot communicate specifics about a student's financial aid award, bill, or outstanding requirements, even if the individual is a parent to the student. If you have been given Parent Access, please have your student's Banner ID number and your Parent PIN number when contacting our office.

Students, follow this user guide to learn how to grant access.

Additional information regarding Parent Access can be found on the Parent Access page of the Registrar's Office website.

Looking for information regarding bills?

After your student has granted Parent Access to you, they will need to add you as an 'Authorized User' in the Student Accounts billing and payment center by Touchnet. Authorized Users can view the student's statement, make an electronic payment, or set up payment plans.  You can find Billing and Payment FAQs as well as a tutorial to set up an Authorized User Account at studentaccounts.appstate.edu.
