Scholarships
Scholarships are a great way to offset your tuition!
Students can apply for scholarships from a variety of resources. Institutional scholarships are awarded by the university, while outside scholarships come from non-university sources. Most awards are either need-based (awarded to students with verified financial need) or merit-based (awarded by GPA and/or extra-curricular achievements).
Beware of scholarship scams. Scholarships that require an application fee are most likely a scam. Never give out your social security number or bank information for a scholarship. Legitimate sponsors should provide contact information upon request. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! For tips and information on identifying a potential scam, click here.
Institutional Scholarships
Institutional scholarships are awarded by Appalachian. Criteria and deadlines vary.
If you are a continuing student, please click here.
Transfer and first-year students should apply through the Office of Transfer Services and the Office of Admissions. These applications are tied to your application for admission to Appalachian. You can find more information by going here (Transfer Students) or here (First-Year Students)
For more information on all institutional scholarships, please see the Office of University Scholarships.
State Scholarships
If you are a North Carolina resident, you are eligible to apply for scholarships through CFNC.org and the NC Community Foundation.
Most scholarship application windows open in January and close early spring. Applications must be received - not postmarked- by the due date. Many of these awards are determined by your program of study, demographic information, GPA, etc.
The FELS program is part of CFNC.org and is considered a scholarship as long as the recipients honor their contract.
Outside Scholarships
Outside scholarships are awards from any non-state, non-institutional source.
These awards can take work to find, but add up quickly! We recommend starting your search locally. Civic and religious organizations often offer scholarships. If you are interested in a specific field, investigate businesses within that field. Occasionally companies offer scholarships for dependents of their employees, so check with your parent's place of work. Your high school advisor is an excellent source for information on local awards.
