Federal Perkins Loan Instructions

The Federal Perkins Loan is a loan to undergraduate and graduate students with need in which Appalachian is the lender. Students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply for the Federal Perkins Loan. If you have been awarded and have accepted the Federal Perkins Loan, see below for instructions on completing the process.

NEW! Appalachian has implemented an electronic Federal Perkins Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) and Entrance Counseling process through ECSI. This means that Appalachian will no longer automatically print and mail Perkins MPN's or Disclosure Statements and that you, the student Perkins Loan borrower, can complete and submit your Perkins MPN and Entrance Counseling electronically. You can also view your Perkins Loan disclosures online.

What To Do Now

Once you have accepted the Federal Perkins Loan, you must complete the following steps in order to finalize the loan process:

  • Complete the Federal Perkins Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN).
  • Complete Federal Perkins Loan Entrance Counseling.

When you receive the email directing you to complete the Perkins Loan MPN and Entrance Counseling electronically, you will need to click on the link provided in the email and confirm your identity by providing your last name, Social Security number, and date of birth. You will then be instructed to authenticate yourself by entering your Social Security number,  the first two characters of your last name,  your date of birth and your Department of Education PIN.
