To be eligible for financial aid, you must:

  • maintain enrollment in a degree program (or in Teacher Certification program, working toward licensure).
  • be enrolled at least half time
    • Undergraduate students, minimum 6 credit hours per semester
    • Graduate students, minimum 5 credit hours per semester
  • be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen (permanent resident).
  • maintain satisfactory academic progress while enrolled.
  • be registered for Selective Service (for state aid only, if applicable).
  • not be in default on a prior federal loan or owe an amount on a prior federal grant.

Financial Need

Most student aid is based on financial need, which is determined by federal guidelines. Universities cannot award need-based aid if it exceeds the student's total financial need.

  • Cost of Attendance (COA) is an estimate of annual educational expenses, including direct costs (tuition, fees, housing, and meal plans) and indirect costs (books, transportation, and personal expenses). COA is a budgeting tool, not a final bill.
  • Student Aid Index (SAI) is calculated using the information entered on your FAFSA, including household size, income and taxes paid. Your SAI helps determine eligibility for different types of aid.
  • Financial Need is calculated by subtracting the Student Aid Index (SAI) from the Cost of Attendance (COA). Learn more about how financial aid is calculated.

International Student Eligibility

International students typically do not qualify for federal or state aid. However, a U.S. National or a U.S. Permanent Resident may be eligible for some funding. To check your eligibility, visit studentaid.gov.
